ATTENTION TRAIL · PRACTICAL GUIDE

Leave yourself a restart note

A short handoff can make returning to unfinished work less confusing.

Stopping in the middle of work is common. The difficult part may be remembering where you were when you return. Before closing a document or putting away materials, leave a brief note for your future self.

Answer three questions

What did I finish? What is the next concrete action? What is blocking that action? For example: “Outlined sections one and two. Next: add the sales table. Waiting for the updated numbers from Tuesday.” Keep the note with the work so you do not have to search for it.

If another person needs to respond, record that separately from the work you can do now. A blocked task is not necessarily an unfinished effort; it may simply need an outside input.

Use the note when you return

Read it before opening a new set of tabs or rewriting your entire plan. Check whether the next action still makes sense and revise it if circumstances changed. This small handoff works with a sticky note or the top of a document. If notes become long reports, shorten them until writing one feels worth the effort.
